We have not forgotten the local Finnish flair with nisu (cardamon-flavored sweet bread) and homemade breads along with freshly brewed coffee.  Dine in the dining room, or enjoy the morning sunrise over the lake from the enclosed sun porch dining table.  First, make a stop at our “coffee bar” located in our dining room for your morning brew! (*Breakfast is not provided when you rent the whole house, but the full kitchen is available for use.

Sauna and Hot Tub

After a fun day of activities, such as hiking trails, kayaking on Lake Superior or Sturgeon River, or biking, our custom hot tub and sauna will soothe and relax you. In addition, our sauna and hot tub are also wonderful after a day of local winter sports,  downhill or cross country skiing or a day on nearby snowmobile trails. The hot tub and sauna will each comfortably accommodate 4 – 6 guests.

So put on your bathing suit, and make your way down to our spa where soft robes are provided!  Melt away your cares in our traditional, Finnish 4-6 person sauna with electric sauna heater.  Just pour a little water on the sauna stove rocks, and enjoy the relaxing “loyly” (“steam” in Finnish). If you want to sound like a local, just say “sauna” the authentic Finnish way, which is “sow-nah”, not “sah-na”.  To cool off afterward, relax on the back deck, with a cool beverage, or head to the swimming pool!

Fireplace and Great Room

Get cozy and warm by the hand-crafted stone hearth in our comfortable great room with large screen TV and music. The wood-burning fireplace provides a welcoming, relaxing glow, with plenty of hand-cut wood logs provided. Sitting by the fire, you have a spectacular view of Lake Superior through the bay window.

Sunroom and Deck

A unique feature of this property is the panoramic, high bluff view of Lake Superior. This stunning  open water view is bordered by the majestic Huron Mountains in the distance. Relax or dine on the large, back deck or in the cheery sun-room overlooking Lake Superior, Keweenaw Bay.  Enjoy this amazing view from our expansive deck that goes along the entire back of the house, or from our cozy glassed-in sun room.

Swimming Pool

During the summer months, our outdoor, heated, salt-water swimming pool provides a great way to cool off and enjoy water fun. Our pool area has deck seating, table and chairs for outdoor dining, as well as a gas grill available. While mesh gates can be closed to shut off the pool area, children are not allowed in the pool area unattended.   Swimming is at your own risk and a lifeguard is not provided.

Lake Superior

Our guest home is located on the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Lake Superior is the most pure, largest and deepest of the Great Lakes. The lake is so clear, you can see about eight feet underwater!  As you stand above Lake Superior on the red sandstone-layered cliffs on our lakeside, you can also view the beautiful sandstone layers underwater.

Even if you swim in the hottest part of the summer, you’ll learn that Lake Superior is the coldest of the Great Lakes. Locals love the challenge of being the first to dunk into the water when it warms up after the winter snow and ice melt!  Come visit during the Haikenpaiva Festival in January, hosted by Finlandia University! As part of the month-long festivities and Finnish cultural events, watch, or join in the Polar Bear dive challenge. Students from Finlandia University, Michigan Technological University, and locals, participate in the Polar Bear dive, as well as in the Haikenpaiva Parade!  In addition, winter ice fishing is a popular sport among locals and visitors.
